Luiza Zan

Luiza Zan is a singer, songwriter, lyricist, high class performer, and one of the most prominent figures in Romanian jazz.

Her career started in 1984, when she was 4 years old. Back then, during the Communist era, she won a competition for the so-called “Homeland Falcons”. Twenty years later, she performed the same piece she had sung for that children’s contest (“Little Milkweed Leaf”) at the International Golden Stag Festival, where she received a most important award, exactly one week after winning a prestigious 2nd award at the Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.

In Montreux she had, for the first time, the chance to sing accompanied by famous musicians, such as Geri Allen, Bob Hurst, Eric Harland and Omar Hakim. A sensational year, 2004 ended with another prize she obtained at the Jazz Awards, organized by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, where she was conferred the “Award of Confirmation”.

Among the many musicians with whom she sang there were Rick Condit – US Professor and saxophonist who had played with Ella Fitzgerald Big Band, Mircea Tiberian, Romeo Cosma, Ion Baciu Jr., Armen Donelian, Jurgen Bothner, Arthur Balogh, Vlaicu Golcea, Vlad Popescu, Sorin Romanescu, Electric Brother, DJ Vasile, McNeeste State University Big Band of Louisiana, Petras Geniusas, Alex Harding, to give just a few examples.

Over the years, besides her musical projects, Luiza was also involved in other artistic fields. She was part of the team performing the play “Năpasta” directed by Radu Afrim and she appeared in the distribution of the contemporary dance show “VISA Game” with Cosmin Manolescu and Pascal Allio. She also composed the soundracks for the movies “Carambol”, “Circul Vesel” (HBO) “Australia” (HBO).
